Files arrive with the submission
A multipart form with a file input just works. Formwire stores the files with the submission and links them from the notification email and the dashboard.
Common file types, sensible limits
Each file can be up to 10 MB, a submission up to 25 MB and 10 files. Anything larger is refused before it's read, so a huge upload never ties up your form.
- Documents, images, archives, audio and video are accepted. Web pages, SVG and programs are refused.
- The field name is kept, so a CV and a cover letter stay apart.
Secure links, not attachments
The notification email carries a signed link to each file rather than the file itself, so large uploads never bounce off a mailbox limit. Email links work for 7 days; files open from the submission in the dashboard too.
- Every upload is scanned for viruses before anyone can download it.
Storage
Everything your organization stores, trash included, counts against its storage: 5 GB on Pro. Deleting a submission frees its files after the 30-day trash period.
Add a file input
Set the form's encoding to multipart and add the input. No JavaScript needed.
- 1
Add enctype="multipart/form-data" to the form tag.
- 2
Add an <input type="file"> with a name; add multiple to accept several files in one field.
- 3
Post the form. Files over 10 MB each or 25 MB together are refused with a clear error.
- 4
Open the submission in the dashboard or follow the links in the email to download the files.
<form action="https://formwire.io/submit" method="POST"
enctype="multipart/form-data">
<input type="hidden" name="access_key" value="YOUR_ACCESS_KEY">
<input type="email" name="email" required>
<input type="file" name="cv" accept=".pdf,.doc,.docx">
<input type="file" name="portfolio" multiple>

</form> Questions about file uploads
Which file types are allowed?
PDFs, office documents, images, text and CSV, zip archives, and common audio and video, within 10 MB a file and 25 MB a submission. Web pages, SVG and programs are refused. Use the accept attribute on the input to steer visitors toward the types you want.
Are the files attached to the email?
No, the email links to them. Attachments make large emails bounce; a link always arrives. The same files are on the submission in the dashboard.
Does fetch work too?
Yes. Send a FormData object with the files appended and Formwire reads it the same way as a plain HTML form.
What happens when storage is full?
A submission that carries files is refused with a clear error until you free space. Submissions without files keep arriving.
